Music is something I believe that everyone can enjoy and at one point have gotten them through rough times. Well being an Asian kid, music didn't get me through rough times. It gave me the rough times. Almost every kid had to learn how to play an instrument at one point, some of the more common ones were the piano and violin. Practicing everyday was 50% of an Asian kid's childhood and the rest was studying or doing homework. Asian parents always pushes their child to learn some sort of musical abilities but it wasn’t to just enjoy it and learn something new but more importantly they thought it would help boost their college application later down the road. From my perspective, I did not think that my musical skills really have a significant impact on my application. It did make my application less boring but it wasn't big enough to really play a big role. Obviously, it depends on how you use your skills but that's where the catch comes into play. Asian parents want their children to invest their time in their musical skills but they only want them to do it for the college application and then that's it. No career for music. This makes all the kids, that have developed a passion over the years due to all the time spent honing their skills, feel discouraged. I understand the point of view of the parents and why it makes sense for them to try to do anything they can to push their kid to get accepted for the best college, but if you are doing an activity only for the application then the motivation and the heart that should go into an activity won't be there and it will impact you later on in life. Music can help you get into college but if you don't feel like you have a connection with it, then find a different activity that you genuinely enjoy.
